VINA eRouter vs. ADTRAN, Cisco, and Netopia T1 WAN Performance Evaluation

Abstract

Tolly Group Report #202131 (July 2002) evaluates VINA Technologies eRouter against ADTRAN Total Access 616-TDM and 600R-TDM, Cisco 1720 and Netopia R5300 in zero-loss (<0.001% packet loss) T1 access-router tests.

Performance results. The eRouter was the only platform to reach 100% of theoretical T1 bandwidth at every frame size (64, 512, 1,500 bytes) even with NAT and sixteen IP filters enabled, delivering 1.544 Mbit/s aggregate throughput while rivals ranged from 0.986 Mbit/s to 1.44 Mbit/s. In the most demanding 64-byte test it provided 20% more zero-loss throughput than its nearest competitor and up to 36% higher than the worst performer.

Implications. By sustaining full-rate T1 forwarding under real-world NAT and filtering overhead, the VINA eRouter lets small and midsize offices fully utilize their circuits without sacrificing security or policy functions, outperforming four comparable access routers on every metric tested.
