Foundry Networks FastIron JetCore Chassis Layer 2 & Layer 3 IP Interoperablility Evaluation

Abstract

Tolly Group Report #202140 (August 2002) verifies that Foundry’s FastIron JetCore chassis (v7.5.04) interoperates with thirteen switches from eight vendors—Alcatel, Allied Telesyn, Avaya, Cisco, Dell, Extreme Networks, NEC, and Nortel.

  • Layer 2 readiness. The chassis passed every mandatory auto-negotiation, IEEE 802.3ad link-aggregation, 802.1p/Q VLAN, Gigabit-Ethernet uplink, and Accelerated Spanning Tree test with all supported peers.

  • Layer 3 and redundancy. It exchanged RIP v1/v2, OSPF, and IPX RIP routes with every capable device, delivered VRRP hot-standby with nine peers, and distributed multicast via DVMRP with all peers, PIM-SM with eight, and PIM-DM with seven.

  • Optional high-capacity links. The FastIron forwarded 9,000-byte jumbo frames loss-free with every switch that tested and formed interoperable 10 GbE LAN-PHY links with four third-party platforms.

These results demonstrate that the FastIron JetCore chassis provides full multi-vendor compatibility for core Layer 2/3 functions, redundancy, multicast, jumbo-frame transport, and 10 GbE uplinks, ensuring seamless integration into heterogeneous campus and backbone networks without interoperability gaps.
