3-Year TCO of Using Infoblox Authoritative IPAM for DNS and DHCP

Abstract

Many IT organizations attempt to minimize upfront costs by using the “free” Microsoft DNS, DHCP and IP address management (IPAM) features that are bundled with Microsoft Server 2012 R2 and combining that with manual processes to control basic tasks within the infrastructure equipment. While the upfront investment may be less, the actual cost of dayto- day management can be enormous when compared to enterprise-grade tools built for core network services. Infoblox integrates tightly with Microsoft DNS and DHCP servers to provide an intuitive and comprehensive solution for managing IP addresses. In addition, the Infoblox Network Insight platform provides robust network discovery and change automation capabilities that is not part of the Microsoft offerings. Tying traditional DNS/ DHCP data with enhanced network discovery provides a truly authoritative source of truth within the IP address management database and user interface.

Infoblox commissioned Tolly to measure and verify the time and cost savings comparing Microsoft’s manual network update processes to the Infoblox DNS, DHCP & IP (DDI) automated platform. The investment in Infoblox provides a rapid payback with the enhanced discovery, visibility and control options when compared to the “free” legacy approach. Extrapolating the time savings from a number of common tasks shows that potential cost savings of employee time can exceed $1million over three years.
