Motorola Codex 3512 SDC DSU/CSU Synchronous Data Compression over 56Kbps Leased Lines

Abstract

Motorola Codex commissioned Tolly to evaluate its 3512 SDC Data Service Unit/Channel Service Unit (DSU/CSU) digital data transmission units in a bridged LANs-over-WAN environment.

The testing involved running a pair of these units across a simulated 56Kbit/s leased-line data link and benchmarking the integrated data compression capabilities of the device.

Tests showed that the devices could deliver up to ~250Kbit/s of throughput when data compression was enabled. Tests were run both using Novell NetWare interactive traffic and traffic from a frame generation tool. Throughput was benchmarked for both unidirectional and bidirectional traffic scenarios.

This test was first published under the InterLAB brand but was rebranded when InterLAB became The Tolly Group in 1994.
