Abstract

Madge Networks, Inc. commissioned The Tolly Group to evaluate the performance of the Madge Smart Ringswitch and compare its performance to that of the SpeedSwitch 100 from Bay Networks/Centillion Networks. The Tolly Group executed a series of tests designed to quantify the throughput and latency performance of these switches. 

The testing demonstrated conclusively that the Ringswitch is capable of very high throughput and very low latency. The Madge Smart Ringswitch forwarded more than 42,000 frames per second (fps) per port when source route bridging four streams of traffic for an aggregate throughput of over 170,000 fps. The Rignswitch also topped 45,000 fps in the single-stream source route bridging test. 

These results compared very favorably against the Bay/Centillion SpeedSwitch 100, which forwarded only 26,000 fps in single-stream tests, and 12,000 fps per port in the quad-stream test.
