D-Link commissioned The Tolly Group to compare three small office/home office (SoHo) routers: the D-Link netXpand DI-1184 (version 1.2.30), the 3Com AccessBuilder 4000 (version 5.1), and the Shiva LANRover/E Plus (version 3.5).

Each router was configured as a remote access server and tested to quantify performance using IPX and IP traffic. The D-Link and 3Com devices were also tested to determine their LAN-to-LAN routing performance with IP and IPX traffic across a T1 (1,536 Kbit/s) leased-line link.

Results show that the netXpand DI-1184 offers throughput that is comparable with industry leaders 3Com and Shiva at less than half the price. The netXpand DI-1184 is the clear winner in terms of effective throughput per dollar spent on the base hardware.
