IBM Corporation commissioned The Tolly Group to compare the processing

efficiency of Communications Server gateway and Microsoft SNA Server ver- sion 2.11 Service Pack 1 (SP1) in several PC platforms and gateway configurations.

The Tolly Group measured gateway transaction throughput, CPU utilization, and response time for each product while servicing up to 448 LU sessions in a lo- cal token ring LAN environment.

Because each gateway requires a different operating system, (OS/2 WARP 3.0 for Communications Server and Windows NT 3.51 SP4 for SNA Server,) the gateways are compared as complete systems. Both gateways were tested on the same hardware platforms.

Additionally, IBM requested that The Tolly Group compare SNA routing performance using Communications Server’s HPR (High Performance Rout- ing) support versus earlier APPN (Advanced Peer-to-Peer Networking) support. Microsoft SNA Server does not offer HPR SNA routing or full APPN support.
