Global Internet commissioned The Tolly Group to test and compare its Centri Firewall for Windows NT, an appli- cation proxy, to FireWall-1 for Windows NT from Check Point Software Technologies Ltd., a circuit-level gateway that employs Check Point’s “stateful inspection” technology.

The Tolly Group compared the effectiveness of each firewall in regulating communications between private networks, such as a corporate LAN, and public networks, such as the Internet. The Tolly Group tested each firewall’s effectiveness in for- warding or blocking a variety of network services that represent a potential security threat to internal networks. In addition to FTP, Telnet and HTTP services, The Tolly Group also examined how the firewalls controlled new technologies like ActiveX and Java, which could be used to compromise the security of private networks.
