Router Functionality & Cisco Interoperability

Abstract

SsangYong commissioned The Tolly Group to evaluate both the bridge/routing capabilities and performance of its SR- 2501 router and SR-2505 RUB (router/Ethernet Hub). The Tolly Group configured a full range of LAN and WAN bridge/routing scenarios and verified basic functionality of each bridge router. The Tolly Group also verified interoperability between the SR- 250X products and the Cisco 2501 (IOS 11.0(5)), and compared the WAN performance of the SR-2501 and SR-2505 to that of the Cisco 2501. Testing was performed in March-April of 1997.

The SR-2501 and SR-2505 are fully functional IP and IPX WAN routers, using RIP (Routed Information Protocol) for IP and IPX, and OSPF (Open Shortest Path First) for IP. Further both bridge/routers demon- strated spanning tree bridging, and wide area PPP (Point to Point Protocol) including two PPP access security protocols, PAP (Password Authentication Protocol) and CHAP (Challenge Handshake Authentication Protocol).

Further, the SR-2501 and SR-2505 can provide bridging and routing of the above protocols simultaneously, and can interoperate with Cisco’s 2501 in each scenario.

In the performance tests, the results show that both the SR-2501 and SR-2505 deliver 56 Kbit/s and T1 WAN performance either comparable to that of the Cisco 2501.
