Abstract
Olicom commissioned The Tolly Group to conduct a comprehensive evaluation of the LAN Emulation (LANE) services implemented in the Olicom ATM PCI RapidFire 155 Adapter OC-6152. The Tolly Group evaluated the adapter’s support of several major operating systems, its operational compatibility with seven ATM switches, its implementation of some advanced LANE features and the overall ease-of-use aspects of the product. The product successfully completed all tests and showed itself easy to install. Testing was conducted in June 1997.
Before extended functions can be assessed, core support must be verified. Under each operating environment, the station under test joined an ELAN (Emulated LAN) and established communications with other stations on that ELAN. Employing actual application functions, The Tolly Group verified that the Olicom card and drivers worked with the latest versions of Microsoft Windows NT 4.0, Microsoft Windows 95, and Novell NetWare 4.11.
Since multi-vendor operation is key, The Tolly Group also evaluated the adapter’s operational compatibility with seven ATM switches set up for this purpose at The Tolly Group’s facility: 3Com Corp. CoreBuilder 7000, Bay Networks Centillion 100, Cabletron Systems SmartCell 250-ZX, Digital Equipment Corp. GIGASwitch ATM, FORE Systems ASX- 200BX, Madge Networks Collage 740, Olicom CrossFire 9100. The Olicom ATM adapter was shown to operate in LAN Emulation mode with all of the aforementioned ATM switches.
